Nine green turtles, Chelonia mydas, of the pale form known as the yellow morphotype, tracked by satellite for up to 418 days, all stayed inside the Galápagos Marine Reserve. The study appeared in late August. Its mean home range contains an arithmetic error that the press release repeated.

Home range (95 per cent of locations) of each of the nine yellow-morphotype green turtles tracked by satellite in the Galápagos between 2015 and 2018, with days tracked. In grey, Ainoa, tracked for only 45 days. The dashed orange line is the median, 1,497.9 square kilometres, which the paper presents as the mean. The dotted line is the true mean, 4,272.9. Log scale.

Scala logaritmica.

Isotopes in the enamel of three Tyrannosaurus rex teeth give a body temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius, with a standard error of 2.5. Crocodilians that lived in the same places come out cooler. The paper was published in Science Advances on 16 September 2026, and its abstract and the authors’ deposited data were read for this article.
A pinch of enamel powder, taken from a fossil tooth, goes into an acid bath at 90 degrees. Carbon dioxide comes off. The gas enters a mass spectrometer, an instrument that sorts molecules by weight. Each analysis uses between 3.7 and 5.4 milligrams of powder. The tooth belongs to Tyrannosaurus rex and comes from the Hell Creek Formation, Late Cretaceous rocks in the United States.

A team led by the University of Tartu has reconstructed 26 genomes of the plague bacterium from eleven European sites, dated between 1349 and 1710. A new dating method tentatively links 75 genomes to outbreaks recorded in the archives. Of the paper, published in PNAS, the abstract was read.

In blue, the span covered by the 26 new Yersinia pestis genomes, 11 complete and 15 at lower coverage, from eleven European sites, 1349 to 1710. In grey, for comparison, a 100-year interval, the width that radiocarbon dates of ancient genomes often exceed. The Bat1K consortium has read 103 complete genomes and 44 fossils. The most likely origin of bats, and of flight in mammals, is late Palaeocene Europe, with a probability of 99.2 per cent. On the exact date, the press releases and the paper do not say the same thing.

Dates that matter for the origin of bats, in millions of years ago: in blue the late Palaeocene, the epoch in which the paper places the common ancestor in Europe (posterior probability 99.2%); hatched in orange the 65–60 million year interval given in university press releases; in grey the span of the oldest bat fossils; dotted lines for the end-Cretaceous extinction, the African origin of Yinpterochiroptera and the fossil Vielasia.

A team from Berkeley, the US NIST and two British institutions carbonised a modern papyrus scroll written in lead-laced ink, and read it with X-rays without opening it. It is a test on a model, not on an ancient papyrus.

In orange, the lead measured in the letters of two ancient Herculaneum fragments by an earlier study cited by the authors (84 ± 5 and 16 ± 5).
